Biography
They
are here to put the URF! back in surf! They love tremolo, they love
beer and they've got guts! It's: "The Inebriated Sounds of The
Tremolo Beer Gut". Having existed only 6 months, having played
about 9 gigs and rehearsed only 12 times the band has already
released a 7-inch single called "While Squaresville Is Watching
From Afar..." on the prestigious garrage-label Bad Afro Records
and after May 1st their debut album is out on the Crunchiest of
Frogs.
The band was formed after Sune Wagner (of the very popular danish
band Psyched Up Janis) and Yebo (of Thau and Tothe International -
and the choice drummer of PUJ) sat listening to old surf tapes in a
tour bus. They wondered why there were no surf bands in Denmark
after the famed and feared OK Kings split up several years ago.
"It's a great job, and somebody's gotta do it!", they
thought and immediately thought up a name and a concept for the
band. They wanted to play with a couple of cool cats (and really
nice guys, too). First they thought of Jengo (from late Trains &
Boats & Planes) who happens to be the nicest guitarist in the
land and also a distinguished guitar player in his own right.
"We gotta have somebody swedish, 'cause nobody loves beer like
the swedes", they agreed, and gathered all their courage to ask
Per Sunding (Eggstone) to play the bass. He agreed even before he
heard the songs, and The Tremolo Beer Gut was a reality.
Hot damn! - one might think - this must be a hell of a band, and -
true - it's not your everyday Joe that's playing in Tremolo.

The Tremolo Beer Gut plays old school surf & western, a genre
they've thought up themselves, which draws inspirations from the
ultra cool rough twangy guitar sound of 50'ies and 60'ies surf as
well as the great film music of Mancini, Barry and Moricone. The
songs are short and instrumental (apart from occasional shouting and
carrying on). Almost all the material is original although the Beer
Guts also play surf versions of songs from Kraftwerk, Sonic Youth
and THAU.
21 songs was recorded during a 2 day "Inebriated" session
in Tambourine Studios under the supervision of producer "The
Great Nalna" (aka Ulrik Petersen of THAU and Tothe
International who previously produced Learning From Las Vegas).
Emphasis was put on energy and intensity and not on correcting minor
mistakes and errors. True to the old school of recording only a
limited set of mic's was used and such techniques as ambient
drum-mic'ing and tape delays as well as other analog effects was
applied to the overall ultra-before-retro sound, and the result is
stunningly cool. No surprise there, really. It's pretty damn cool.
This is actually colder than cool. It's freezing.
The news about the first TBG-album traveled all over the world thanks to the great rep as a live act, that the band
quickly achieved, and also due to the fact that 3 songs from the '98 sessions got released as the Bad Afro single "While Squaresville Is
Watching From Afar...". Bad Afros large mail order network soon got the word out that there was a cool new instro-act in town,
and so even the Japanese heard of the band. The debut album was released in Japan during the summer of '99.
The band also worked a lot on promoting the debut in the US of A, and it
was just before their appearance at the CMJ Festival that the band learned that they had a very prominent fan in Mr. Jon Spencer of the Blues Explosion. A month before their
departure for the States they got a call from The BX manager asking if they could support the band in Århus, Denmark.
Unfortunately they couldn't, but in stead drummer Yebo went up to Århus to meet Spencer and give him more Tremolofonic
records. This was the first meeting of the minds. The two musicians discovered that they were indeed mutual fans, and agreed to
see each other again when The TBG came to NY in the fall. And lo and behold! Who was the first guest at the Crunchy Frog
show case at CMJ '99? Yes indeed: Jon Spencer. In the time after these meetings the bands tried hard to get to play together in
Japan, but as every attempt failed The Tremolo Beer Gut ended up doing a European tour together in '00 with Spencer's other
band, Boss Hog. Playing London, Amsterdam, Malmö, Hamburg and Berlin, the bands ended their tour by playing a version of
Sonic Youth's "Death Valley '69" together in Berlin. The Beer Gut played the back line and the girls of Boss Hog sang, while Jon
Spencer did the front of the house sound. A psychedelic experience indeed!
All during '99 and '00 The Tremolo Beer Gut played numerous live shows - including the South By Southwest Festival in Austin,
Texas - and improved on their skills at playing while under the influence. All these shows peaked when the band got the
opportunity to open the main stage at Roskilde Festival 2000 in front of an audience of 30.000. For this occasion the band teamed
up with Patrik Bartosch from Eggstone on the Farfisa organ and Anders Reus playing Theremin, as they had done so often before
- but this time also with "The B-Team": a collection of cool cats with deep voices, that applied Russian Western Chorus, mandolins
and percussion to the Tremolorama. It was an 11 piece band that rocked Roskilde and gained
many new fans to the band!
Just after summer '00 the band got the offer to compose music for a Howard Barker play being staged both in Malmö and
Copenhagen as a collaboration between the Royal Danish Theater and Malmö's Dramatic Theater. This proved to be a great
opportunity to write new material for a new record as well. The band did 17 song in MONO - just to make it even more old
school then the first album. Out of the 17 songs on "Under The Influence of The Tremolo Beer Gut" about half was also used for
the play "Animals In Paradise", and the band even played live at all the shows in Malmö and Copenhagen.
As said before the new album was recorded in MONO - also a tribute to the old productions of Phil Spector, Brian Wilson and
others. Again the album was recorded in Gula and Tambourine Studios - and most of the dubs were even made at Eggstone's
Rehearsal Mansion. The record was done in 6 days (2 days of basic tracks, 2 days of dubs, 2 days of mix), and the actual
product was in distribution only 6 weeks after the first day of recording. Yeah, this band really IS shooting from the hip.... but they
always HIT dead on!!!"
A short while after
the release of UTIO-album the initial 7-inch single was sold out and
a lot of fans was unable to get that legendary release. So it was
decided to release the "From the Vinyl Archives of..." ep.
In tru old school fashion the tracks were transferred from the
original vinyl and onto the digtial CD master. You can actually hear
the pick up being lifted onto the groves. In addition to the 3
tracks from WSIWFA...-single the special vinyl bonus-tracks were
included as well making the new release a must have for all
non-vinyl-groovers.
In the years thereafter TBG journeyed on playing many a legendary
show, but the slow departure of Sune to his new band The Raveonettes
meant that not much new music was produced. For a while TBG played
with sound engineer and producer The Great Nalna as temp guitarist
until making him a full member of the band in 2005. Nalna had
already done a few splendid solos and leads on the recordings (for
instance both the solo and lead on "Tahonga Lounge Babe").
Thus The Tremolo Beer Gut is now ready to record again, and plans
have been made for new songs to be captured onto tape in the end of
2005....
